Six men wanted over Portsmouth anti-migrant disorder

Hampshire police sifted hundreds of hours of CCTV after a night at Eastney Marina left seven officers hurt.

A crowd at the marina

About 200 people gathered at Eastney Marina on Sunday night after a small boat carrying asylum seekers crossed the Channel and arrived on the south coast. They dispersed early the next morning.

Seven officers hurt

All seven injured officers were treated at the scene, none seriously. Coastguard and Border Force vehicles were damaged during the night.

Hundreds of hours of footage

Officers reviewed the recordings before naming anyone, picking out six men they believe can help the investigation. The force asked the public to call 101 quoting reference 44260435943.

“The reality of public order policing is that arrests at the time are not always possible”

First charges land

Del Leon Somerville, 42, of Paulsgrove, appeared at Portsmouth magistrates court charged with violent disorder and assaulting a police constable. A 16-year-old from Waterlooville is on bail until 12 December.

Not protest, disorder

Assistant chief constable Tony Rowlinson drew a line between demonstration and what happened at the marina, and police are now investigating online threats aimed at officers and partner staff.

“Clearly events on Sunday evening were not peaceful protest, rather violent public disorder.”

The key point

Public order policing has shifted to the aftermath: fewer arrests on the night, more identifications from footage weeks later.
