Teenage soldier's death sparks trial

Gunner Jaysley Beck, 19, died by suicide in December 2021, five months after being sexually assaulted by a superior during a training exercise. Two officers faced court martial for how they handled her case.

Officers accused of mishandling complaint

Col Samantha Shepherd was accused of lying when reporting Beck's allegations and deliberately playing them down. Maj James Hook allegedly dismissed her complaints and thought she was making them up to leave the exercise.

The military board ordered not guilty pleas for both officers after a key witness's evidence did not support the allegation that Shepherd lied. The judge ruled the evidence was "inconsistent, vague and tenuous."

“The evidence in this case is inconsistent, vague and tenuous.”

Family fears chilling effect on reporting

Beck's family expressed concern that the acquittal could discourage other young service members from reporting assaults. They noted that during trial, a military witness described sexual harassment as not unusual in the army.

“What does that tell you about the culture?”

Coroner found serious failings

A coroner previously identified multiple serious failings in how Beck's case was handled that contributed to her death. The family said these findings still stand despite the court martial outcome.

“The army let our daughter down very badly.”

Beck's family said it causes them enormous pain that Major Hook, one of the first people she told, thought she was making up the allegation to escape the exercise. They said they can never forgive that reaction.

“We can never forgive that.”

Defence secretary pledges more change

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said significant changes have been introduced since Beck's death but more work is needed. The army committed to building a culture founded on respect, trust and accountability.
