First UK genocide charges

Dr Vincent Brown, sixty-five, formerly Dr Vincent Bajinya, has been charged with crimes linked to the nineteen ninety-four Rwandan genocide. This is the first case of its kind brought in the UK.

Seven charges against Brown

Brown, who used to live in Kigali but now lives in Islington, north London, will appear at Westminster magistrates court on Tuesday. He faces one charge of conduct ancillary to genocide and six charges of conduct ancillary to murder as a crime against humanity.

Allegations of directing murder

The Crown Prosecution Service says Brown is alleged to have directed and incited acts of murder and genocide carried out by others during the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda in nineteen ninety-four.

“He is alleged to have directed and incited acts of murder and genocide carried out by others.”

The Metropolitan police war crimes team began investigating Brown in September two thousand nineteen after a request from the Rwandan government. The investigation focused on those allegedly involved in genocide in the Rugenge district of Kigali in April nineteen ninety-four.

UK not a safe haven

Commander Helen Flanagan, head of counter-terrorism policing London, said the charges demonstrate the UK is not a safe haven for those suspected of committing international crimes. Other investigations remain ongoing into other individuals in the UK for similar offences.

“This case demonstrates the UK is not a safe haven for individuals suspected of committing international crimes.”
