Shortify Button

Give readers the short version of your article, in an overlay over your page.

Try it

Add it to your site

  1. 1

    Copy the snippet

    <div data-shortify-button></div>
    <script src="https://shortify.news/widget/v1.js" async></script>
  2. 2

Paste it into your article template

Where the button should appear, such as under the headline.

Where that is on your platform
    WordPress
Edit your post template (or a post), add a Custom HTML block where the button should go, and paste the snippet.
    Ghost
Add an HTML card to the post, or paste it into post.hbs in your theme so every post gets it.
    Webflow
Drop an Embed element into your CMS collection template and paste the snippet.
    Squarespace / Wix
Add a Code (or Embed HTML) block to the blog post layout and paste the snippet.
    React, Next.js, Vue
Render the div in your article component, load the script once, and call window.Shortify.render() after each page change.
  3. 3

    Publish and click it

Open any article. The short version opens over the page.

Options

data-url
The article to shorten. Defaults to the page's canonical URL.
data-theme
light, dark or auto (the default, following the reader's system).
data-label
The button's text. Defaults to “Read the short version”.

New articles

The first reader to click makes the short version of a new article; after that it opens instantly for everyone. Your site gets up to 25 new ones a day, for articles on your own site. Approved publishers get 100. They stay with your readers: they are not listed in Shortify's feed or search.

Single-page apps

Buttons on the page at load are drawn automatically. After adding articles later, call:

Shortify.render(); // draw any new buttons
Shortify.destroy(element); // remove buttons inside element
Shortify.open(url); // open the overlay without a button

element.addEventListener("shortify:open", ...); // also shortify:ready, shortify:close
