In brief
Glenelg traders worry public brawls will deter families and tourists as police launch beach patrols. Traders at Glenelg Beach fear repeated public fights will drive away families and tourists over summer, prompting police to launch Operation Jericho to increase patrols. Originally reported by Abc.
Fight at Glenelg Jetty on Sunday
Police responded to a disturbance involving a large group of youths at Glenelg Jetty on Sunday afternoon. A fifteen-year-old Marino boy was charged with disorderly behaviour.
Part of a pattern of beach brawls
The alleged brawl happened weeks after police responded to separate public fights at Glenelg and Henley Beach in September, which drew crowds of hundreds of young people.
Traders worry about summer impact
Shop vendor Candice Pemberton said she was concerned the disturbances would affect business if they continue. If things keep happening people will not come and shop, she said.
“It's not great, if it continues to happen it'll keep families away from the area as well and we rely on families to come in and have a look and buy our stuff.”
Hotel worker reassures on safety
Joshua Hissey from the Stamford Grand Hotel witnessed the alleged brawl and estimated fifty to one hundred people gathered. He said police were there very quickly and people should feel safe.
“It's a very well secured area here, the police were there on scene very quickly so if anything does happen everyone can feel safe and not worry about their day to day in Glenelg.”
Social media may fuel the fights
Nineteen-year-old beachgoer Luke Craker said the behaviour could be driven by social media content promoting backyard fights. Influencers and streamers promote it for money, he said.
“There's lots of influencers and streamers that promote it a lot because of the money.”
Police launch Operation Jericho
In response to the fights, police brought forward the launch of Operation Jericho to ramp up patrols along popular Adelaide beaches to crack down on anti-social behaviour.
The takeaway
Traders at Glenelg Beach fear repeated public fights will drive away families and tourists over summer, prompting police to launch Operation Jericho to increase patrols.
