Voting closes in New Zealand
New Zealanders have finished casting their ballots in an election overshadowed by cost of living pressures and international economic shocks.
Major parties ran negative campaigns
National and Labour focused on criticising each other and their leaders rather than promoting their own records, experts say.
“The policy contest which marked the opening stanzas has largely fallen away into an acrimonious exchange between the left and the right about how to game the electoral system through strategic voting.”
Smaller parties focused on policy
New Zealand First, ACT, the Green Party, Te Pāti Māori and the Opportunity party emphasised policy initiatives and their vision for the country.
Results expected over several hours
Results will arrive tonight over several hours. The official count begins tomorrow, with the Electoral Commission aiming to release official results by November twenty-seventh.
“We may have a clear result tonight, but that seems unlikely.”
The takeaway
New Zealand's election closes with National and Labour locked in a tight race overshadowed by cost of living concerns, with results arriving over several hours tonight.
