BRIN intensifies nuclear research

Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency is accelerating feasibility studies and technological research to identify optimal sites and reactor systems for a future nuclear power plant in East Kalimantan.
Nuclear power becomes necessity
BRIN Head Arif Satria stated that establishing a nuclear power plant has become an operational necessity, driven by soaring industrial energy demand and the nation's green economy transition.
“A nuclear power plant has become an inevitability.”
Three coastal sites identified
National energy planning documents identified three prospective coastal locations in East Kalimantan: Sangatta in East Kutai, Samboja in Kutai Kartanegara, and Babulu in North Penajam Paser for rigorous reactor site assessment.
Sites chosen for safety features

These areas were selected for their abundant marine cooling water and stable geological structures that are relatively secure from major earthquakes. Technical evaluations encompass reactor safety, environmental carrying capacity, and safe distances from population centers.
Timeline and capacity targets
Under state utility PLN's development timeline, the government aims to finalize the location by two thousand twenty-seven at the latest, targeting commercial operations by two thousand thirty-two with an initial two hundred fifty megawatt capacity.
Long-term nuclear expansion planned
National projections outline a massive scale-up of nuclear capacity to between thirty-five and forty-two gigawatts by two thousand sixty, accounting for up to twelve point one percent of Indonesia's primary energy mix.
Here's the gist
Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency is accelerating feasibility studies for a nuclear power plant in East Kalimantan, aiming to select a site by 2027 and begin operations by 2032.
