Hanwha Power

Hanwha Power has obtained Approval in Principle from the American Bureau of Shipping for a 1,700-TEU fully electric container ship design built around a 151 MWh battery energy storage system.
Approval Date
The certificate was presented on Oct. 22 at a maritime technology conference in Bergen, Norway.
Propulsion System
Containerized battery units would serve as the vessel's primary propulsion source, charged through port infrastructure, allowing operation without direct carbon emissions on short-sea and regional routes.
Second Design

Hanwha Power has completed the basic design of a 1,000-TEU battery-powered boxship and plans to study battery leasing and Battery-as-a-Service models to reduce upfront costs for shipowners.
Jong-kyu Hwang
Jong-kyu Hwang, vice president of technology solutions at Hanwha Power, attended the conference with senior officials from the American Bureau of Shipping.
Battery Design
The battery units are built to be lifted and stowed like ordinary freight containers, preserving cargo capacity and allowing batteries to be swapped or scaled as needed.
Next Steps
Hanwha Power will examine financing and operating models including battery leasing and Battery-as-a-Service arrangements to address the upfront cost burden on shipowners.
