Albertsons cuts spousal coverage
Starting next year, Albertsons will no longer offer medical insurance to employees' spouses and domestic partners who have jobs providing such coverage.
Rising costs drive the change
Albertsons expects healthcare costs to increase nine point five percent next year due to inflation, higher prescription drug costs, provider consolidation, and healthcare workforce shortages.
Other benefits also changing
Albertsons is also raising employee paycheck contributions, eliminating two network plans, and increasing deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums for some plans. Disney and Starbucks have made similar moves.
The takeaway
Albertsons is eliminating health insurance for employees' spouses and domestic partners who can get coverage through their own jobs, starting in 2027, to manage a projected nine point five percent increase in healthcare costs.
