In brief
A YouTuber with 40 million subscribers put his own money into a film and proved creators don't have to hand Hollywood the keys. Creator leverage is real now, but keeping creative control means taking the financial risk and learning the unglamorous parts yourself. Originally reported by Business Insider.
He bet his own money
Mark Fischbach wrote, directed, and starred in "Iron Lung" and funded its low seven-figure budget himself. It grossed over $50 million worldwide.
Control is not a trade
The default deal in Hollywood asks creators to hand over the vision in exchange for a budget. Fischbach rejects that as a given.
“In Hollywood, it is kind of like a foregone conclusion that you'll have to give up all control to be able to do anything.”
The old pipeline misfired
A decade ago a TV deal was the badge of arrival. Liza Koshy and Bretman Rock got shows, Lilly Singh's NBC late-night was cancelled, and ratings rarely followed the subscribers.
The arrow flipped
YouTube now holds over 14% of US TV screen time, ahead of Netflix and Disney. Don Lemon, Alton Brown, and Tucker Carlson went the other way, from TV to independent channels.
“YouTubers as a conglomerate are this powerful entity that hold sway.”
Learning is the lever
Theatrical distribution and TV sales are separate crafts, but DIY creators are practised at picking up new formats fast. Fischbach says he studies ahead of time and still plays catch-up.
“Learning things is the most effective way to do more.”
Even YouTube was hard
Releasing the digital version on his own platform meant wrestling with distribution systems he'd never touched. Pushing through the paperwork was part of the point.
“It's not like YouTube where you can just upload a video.”
Most will still fail
A century of would-be moguls had the perfect idea, and recent creator projects have flopped crossing mediums. Fischbach does it for the making, not to build an empire.
“When I'm done, my YouTube channel will be done. It doesn't go any farther than that.”
The main idea
Creator leverage is real now, but keeping creative control means taking the financial risk and learning the unglamorous parts yourself.
