Rails creator's warning on AI
David Heinemeier Hansson, who created Ruby on Rails, predicted on Monday that the age of AI agents will be hard times for cantankerous engineers.
“The age of agents is going to be amazing for most programmers, but it'll be hard times for the cantankerous ones.”
Special abilities won't protect difficult coders
Hansson wrote that technical skill alone will not save engineers who are difficult to work with, marking a shift from software engineering's tolerance of large egos.
“Best learn some basic people skills.”
Engineers debate the change
The prediction sparked conversation among engineers. One noted that AI agents do not care how cantankerous you are, but human coworkers do. Others questioned how new this shift really is.
People skills have always mattered
Dart cofounder Zack Swafford noted that teams tolerated bad attitudes because difficult staff possessed arcane tribal knowledge. One engineer commented that skills get you hired, but being easy to work with keeps you around.
Hansson committed to AI coding future
In September, Hansson declared pencils down on handwritten code, saying writing code was an exceptional state performed only when AI-generated code went wrong.
The big picture
