Elon Musk announced on Friday that Tesla will wind down Cybertruck production from the middle of next year at its Texas gigafactory.

Sales collapsed after launch

The Cybertruck launched in 2023 after years of delays with over one million reservations. Tesla sold twenty thousand Cybertrucks last year and around sixteen thousand so far in twenty twenty-six.

Design and price hurt customer appeal

The truck's unique trapezoid design and higher-than-expected sticker price meant it struggled to get a foothold with customers, despite Musk initially predicting Tesla could sell at least two hundred fifty thousand a year.

Cybertruck became target of vandalism

Cybertruck became target of vandalism

The Cybertruck's distinctive stainless-steel-clad appearance made it a target of anti-Musk and anti-Tesla protests. Owners faced vandalism and abuse as backlash against Musk's government cost-cutting at DOGE swept the nation.

SpaceX was biggest recent buyer

The biggest buyers of Cybertrucks in recent years have been Musk's other companies. Last year SpaceX bought one hundred thirty-one million dollars worth of Cybertrucks to use as support vehicles.

Tesla pivots to robotaxis and robots

The Cybertruck discontinuation is part of Tesla's shift toward robotaxis and humanoid robots. The company discontinued Model S and X premium EVs earlier this year to free factory space for its Optimus humanoid robot.

The main idea

Tesla will wind down Cybertruck production from mid-2027 to make room for Cybercab robotaxi production at its Texas gigafactory.
