Walmart promotes 500 workers daily
Walmart promotes roughly five hundred employees daily, creating constant opportunities for workers to climb the ladder. Chief people officer Donna Morris oversees more than two million people worldwide.
Excel at your current job first
The first trait is staying focused on your current role. Donna Morris says workers who advance quickly are motivated to make a difference and excel in what they do today.
“They are focused as much, if not more, on being exceptional at what they're doing today.”
Take on work above your title
The second trait is proving you can handle responsibilities for the role above you before getting the title. Morris says volunteer for new ideas and initiatives to show you can take on more.
“Be the type of person that takes on over and above what's being expected of you.”
Frontline experience matters for leaders
Morris also values frontline experience when hiring. She started working at thirteen at a dry cleaner's, then at a drugstore two years later. She believes leaders need to understand hourly worker roles.
“If somebody has never really had to identify with what it's like to be a frontline hourly worker, it's going to be very hard for them to lead.”
