Judge halts arch construction

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan blocked the Trump administration from starting construction on the proposed 250-foot triumphal arch for 14 days while legal proceedings continue.

Judge finds government likely broke law

In a 33-page ruling, Chutkan wrote that plaintiffs are likely to succeed in showing the federal government did not follow required legal processes before moving to build the arch.

States have standing to sue, judge rules

Chutkan said Virginia and Washington, D.C. likely have standing to sue, pointing to tangible economic harms caused by traffic problems at the construction site.

Planning commission approves arch anyway

Hours before the judge's ruling, the National Capital Planning Commission voted 8-4 to approve plans for the arch after almost 9 hours of public comments from Congress members, veterans, architects and residents.

Trump official hails historic vision

Mark Paoletta, executive director of the National Capital Planning Commission and top lawyer at the Office of Management and Budget, recommended approval and called it the grandest arch ever built by mankind.

“the "grandest arch ever built by mankind."”

Democrats call arch illegal and disrespectful

California Rep. Jared Huffman said the arch is illegal and would disrupt the solemn connection between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, saying it would dishonor America and its ideals.

“"This arch would dishonor America, our ideals, and our laws."”

Veterans oppose monument near cemetery

Marine veteran Jimi Shaughnessy said a dominating arch with tourists, food trucks and buses near Arlington would be abhorrent and insulting to those who gave all and their families.

“"a dominating arch with a carnival-like atmosphere of tourists, food trucks and buses is abhorrent and insulting to those who gave all and to their families."”

Arch details and visitor projections

The arch will be 166 feet tall topped with three gilded figures, bringing overall height to 250 feet. It will feature an observation deck and could draw between 2,000 and 22,400 visitors daily.

States cite traffic and pollution harms

Virginia and Washington, D.C. argued that breaking ground would inflict irreparable harm through traffic congestion, pollution, stormwater runoff in the Potomac, interference with emergency services and other challenges.

“"the Arch project will inevitably snarl traffic between the jurisdictions, produce pollution and stormwater runoff in the Potomac, interfere with emergency services, and pose numerous other challenges."”

Judge orders notice before any construction

Chutkan required the government to provide her notice within one hour of any National Capital Planning Commission vote and thirty-minute notice before any arch construction preparation.

The one thing

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan blocked construction on Trump's proposed 250-foot triumphal arch for 14 days, ruling the government likely failed to follow required legal processes.
