Two slices of wholegrain bread a day could transform your heart health
Major study finds simple dietary change linked to weight loss, lower cholesterol and reduced heart attack risk.
In brief
Major study finds simple dietary change linked to weight loss, lower cholesterol and reduced heart attack risk. Eating 48g to 100g of whole grains daily (two to four slices of wholegrain bread) can significantly improve heart health markers. Originally reported by Dailymail.
A sandwich could save your heart
New research shows eating two large slices of wholegrain bread daily is linked to weight loss, lower cholesterol and reduced heart attack risk.
Scientists analyzed 87 clinical trials
Researchers examined all existing studies linking wholegrain foods to cardiovascular health, involving over 6,500 people across five continents.
What counts as wholegrain

Wholegrain foods use all parts of the grain, typically lost in processing. Examples include porridge oats, wholewheat pasta and brown rice.
Just 48g daily shows benefits
Consuming roughly two large slices of brown bread or a bowl of oats per day was enough to improve heart health markers.
Four slices bring biggest gains
The greatest improvements occurred at 60g to 100g daily, about four large slices. This level brought the biggest cuts to blood pressure and cholesterol.
Weight loss of half a pound

Participants consuming 48g of whole grains daily lost an average of 0.2kg, or roughly half a pound, though timing varied across studies.
Waist size shrank measurably
Waist circumference reduced by 0.22 centimeters at the 48g level. Less visceral fat around organs means lower disease risk.
Total cholesterol dropped
Cholesterol levels fell by 0.10 mmol/L at 48g daily. The NHS recommends Britons aim for a total cholesterol level of 5mmol/L.
Bad cholesterol fell significantly
Low-density lipoprotein, the so-called bad cholesterol, dropped by 0.07 mmol/L. This type causes fatty deposits that block arteries.
Harmful blood fats decreased
Triglycerides, a blood fat that drives heart disease when high, fell by 0.04 mmol/L. Healthy readings should be below 1.7mmol/L.
Blood pressure improved
Systolic blood pressure, the top number measuring pressure when the heart beats, dropped by 0.82 millimeters of mercury.
Higher intake tripled blood pressure benefits
At 60g to 100g daily, the reduction in blood pressure was three times greater than at the lower 48g level.
Cholesterol cuts doubled at higher intake
Total cholesterol dropped by 0.21 mmol/L at 60g to 100g daily, while LDL cholesterol fell by 0.16 mmol/L and triglycerides by 0.08 mmol/L.
Why whole grains work
They retain key nutrients like fiber, B vitamins, iron, zinc, magnesium, healthy fats and plant compounds called phytonutrients.
Study didn't measure heart attacks directly
Researchers didn't track cardiovascular events like heart attacks and strokes, so longer studies are needed to confirm direct risk reduction.
A simple, affordable dietary change
Lead researcher Dr. Helda Tutunchi says increasing wholegrain intake is an accessible strategy that can complement other lifestyle interventions.
“Increasing wholegrain intake is a relatively simple, accessible and affordable dietary strategy that can complement other lifestyle and medical interventions.”
What to remember
Eating 48g to 100g of whole grains daily (two to four slices of wholegrain bread) can significantly improve heart health markers.
