Square Enix response
Square Enix apologized and said they are investigating the cause of the inflated storage requirement.
“We have confirmed an issue where, after applying the latest update to the steam version of nier, the installation process displays a storage requirement higher than expected.”
Temporary fix
Players can uncheck DLCs in Steam to download the base game without the inflated storage requirement.
