Why AI investments fail to deliver returns
Most companies deploy AI but extract little value. The missing piece is context that helps AI understand the business.

Most AI deployments disappoint
An MIT Technology Review Insights poll finds fewer than one in five organizations extract transformative value from AI. Forty percent see moderate gains in specific tasks, while twenty-three percent see minimal returns or none.
“fewer than one in five (16%) are extracting transformative value from their deployments”
How companies actually use AI today
Thirty-eight percent of respondents are mostly piloting AI use cases. Thirty-five percent use it to assist employees with co-pilots or chat assistants. Just twelve percent have AI agents in production.
The gap between capability and usefulness

Prukalpa Sankar, co-founder of Atlan, says there is a big gap between what AI models are capable of and how useful they actually are inside organizations.
“There's a big gap between what the models are capable of and how the models are actually being useful inside organizations”
Context layer: the missing piece
The missing layer is context, or how well AI understands a business. A context layer is architectural infrastructure between business systems and AI platforms that translates enterprise intelligence into governed, machine-usable context for AI agents.
“Without a context layer for AI, it's almost like you're hiring the smartest intern in the world, blindfolding them, and throwing them into your organization”
The one thing
An MIT Technology Review poll finds fewer than one in five organizations extract transformative value from AI, with most still piloting or using basic assistants rather than production agents.
