Wolverine finally gets the game he deserves

In brief
Insomniac skipped the Spider-Man playbook and built Logan a darker, bloodier, more personal game. The best licensed games adapt the character, not the last successful formula. Wolverine needed linear levels and savage combat, not another open world. Originally reported by Maxim.
The right studio, the right claws

Insomniac made three excellent Spider-Man games, so PlayStation handed them Marvel's most famous loner. The pairing was never in doubt.
Logan is not Spidey

Spider-Man is colorful, acrobatic and optimistic. Logan's world is darker, bloodier and far more brooding, and Insomniac built for that instead of reusing the old template.
“Wolverine is an entirely different beast, though.”
Surprisingly deep story

Under the dismemberment sits an original narrative about identity, loyalty and survival, with Logan facing a crisis threatening mutantkind and a past that refuses to stay buried.
“Marvel's Wolverine is deep.”
A real X-Men roster

Jean Grey, Mystique, Sabretooth and the too-often-forgotten Omega Red show up as part of the story rather than as a cameo parade.
A PS5 showpiece

Snowbound wilderness, neon streets and the seedy corners of Madripoor all look spectacular. Logan regenerating from a skeleton is the standout bit of craft.
Linear beats open world

Webslinging needs a city; Logan needs something more intimate. The level-based structure keeps forward motion while leaving nooks worth poking into, closer to 007 First Light.
“Wolverine requires something more…intimate.”
Brutal combat with depth

Claws tear through enemies with feral violence, but skill trees, Adaptations, rage, parries and the healing factor mean you cannot just mash buttons to win.
Costumes hiding memories

Dozens of unlockable outfits and claws plus a posing photo mode. Hidden challenges are replayable for an Adamantium rank and hand back forgotten memories from Logan's erased past.
The one thing
The best licensed games adapt the character, not the last successful formula. Wolverine needed linear levels and savage combat, not another open world.
