Government claims 75 militants killed
The Somali defence ministry said federal troops killed seventy five militants and wounded fifty six others during the clash in Lower Shabelle region.
Al-Shabaab claims 321 soldiers killed
The Al-Qaeda-linked insurgent group claimed it killed three hundred twenty one government soldiers during an attack on Turkish-trained troops and an allied militia.
No independent verification possible
Neither account could be independently verified, leaving the scale of the casualties unclear and the true outcome of the battle unknown.
Al-Shabaab's account of the attack
Al-Shabaab said it launched its attack on Monday afternoon, describing a three hour ambush in which its fighters captured prisoners, weapons and vehicles.
Government describes it as offensive
The defence ministry presented the fighting as an offensive against militant positions, saying the Somali National Army launched a major assault on October twenty sixth against Al-Shabaab positions in Jameeca.
“The Somali National Army, conducting Operation Banooda, launched a major assault lasting several hours on 26 October against Al-Shabaab positions in Jameeca.”
Government confirms vehicle damage
The defence ministry acknowledged that militants used vehicles packed with explosives during the attack and confirmed damage to military equipment.
“The attack damaged some military vehicles.”
Reports of heavy government losses
Local media platform Baidoa Online reported that the government called an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss heavy casualties and substantial military equipment losses near Leego.
Two decade insurgency continues
The fighting took place in Lower Shabelle region, where the government battles an insurgency that has endured for two decades despite major international effort to defeat it.
US cuts UN logistics funding
Washington has stopped funding the United Nations logistics mission that supplies combat operations in Somalia, citing the government's failure to make progress uniting the country.
Turkey becomes key supporter
Turkey has emerged as a key supporter of the federal government through training Somali troops, becoming increasingly important as the US and other major donors pull back from the counter-insurgency effort.
The big picture
Somalia's government and Al-Shabaab reported sharply conflicting accounts of a Monday battle near Leego, with the defence ministry claiming 75 militants killed and Al-Shabaab claiming 321 government soldiers dead, but neither figure independently verified.
