AI speeds up coding but not software delivery

AI coding speed gains are real
Nearly nine in ten developers surveyed by Atlassian say AI is helping them write and ship code faster, with significant speed improvements across certain parts of the workflow.
But friction remains across the lifecycle
Three in four developers report either the same or greater friction across the entire software development lifecycle, despite the speed gains in code generation.
Long-term time savings are dropping
Just 25% of developers are saving ten or more hours a week using AI, compared with 68% in twenty twenty-five, according to Atlassian's findings.
The bottleneck has moved downstream
Atlassian's findings show AI is shifting the bottleneck further downstream rather than tackling time constraints altogether. Half of developers struggle with finding information and meeting frequency.
“Faster code is not the same as better software delivered sooner.”
AI strategy is largely absent
More than four in five organizations still don't have a clear AI strategy. Three in five developers say AI is being implemented too quickly without consideration for its impacts.
Strategy makes the difference
Companies with an effective AI strategy were found to reduce friction best, with twice as many workers reporting positive effects. Only 17% of developers say their employer has a clearly communicated and implemented AI strategy.
The key point
Atlassian's report shows AI helps developers write code faster, but 72% still face the same or greater friction across the entire software development lifecycle, suggesting speed gains are not translating to faster delivery.
