Apple unveils the iPhone Duo

Apple ended its latest event with a long-rumored foldable. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, placing it squarely against competitor foldables from Google and Samsung.

“This device is undeniably the most capable iPhone ever, as well as the most expensive.”

Ditching the square screen shape

Apple rejected square aspect ratios that stretch apps and add massive black bars to videos. Instead, the Duo uses a passport-like 1:1.4 aspect ratio on both its inner and outer displays.

“While that shape can accommodate two portrait apps side by side pretty well, it’s bad at almost everything else...”

A display built without a crease

The 7.6-inch inner screen combines flexible glass, titanium, and a stiff nano-texture polymer. Apple claims its multi-layer lamination keeps the middle fold invisible over time.

“We couldn’t spot a display crease on the demo units.”

All-day battery with A20 Pro

Running on the A20 Pro chip, the phone promises 24 hours of battery life during mixed usage. Playing video continuously yields 31 hours on the main display and 44 on the outer screen.

Ceramic fibers meet titanium

The frame uses titanium reinforced with internal ceramic fibers for extra strength against daily folding. Apple also added extra antenna line reinforcement and an IP68 water resistance rating.

A 100-component custom hinge

The titanium hinge contains over 100 distinct parts to deliver smooth, variable torque. Built-in frame magnets snap the two halves shut when closed.

Bringing back dropped features

The Duo includes an under-display selfie camera on the main panel and adds Apple Pencil support later this year. Both are features Samsung previously tried and dropped.

iOS adapts to the fold

The status bar and app dock shift to the right edge to save vertical space. Bending the phone triggers adaptive layouts like a split keyboard.

Thinner body, modest camera setup

Unfolded, the Duo is Apple's thinnest phone yet, though it trims camera specs to fit. It features a 48MP main camera and a 12MP 2x telephoto lens.

High price tag, competitive spot

Preorders begin October 16 before shipping on October 23. Storage options start at 256GB for $1,999 and go up to 2TB for $3,199.
