In brief
Seven years after Samsung pioneered the category, Apple is finally releasing its first foldable iPhone starting at $1,999. The iPhone Duo brings Apple into foldables with a $1,999 passport-shaped design featuring a 7.6-inch inner screen and Touch ID. Originally reported by The Verge.
Apple unveils the iPhone Duo

Apple has officially announced its first foldable smartphone, starting at $1,999 for 256GB of storage. Preorders open October 16th with full availability on October 23rd.
“The Duo will be available to preorder from October 16th, going on sale on October 23rd, a month later than the two 18 Pro models.”
Passport size with massive display
Closed, the device matches the compact shape of a passport with a 5.4-inch outer display. Unfolded, it expands into a giant 7.6-inch screen, the largest ever on an iPhone.
“a similar size to a passport when closed, with a 5.4-inch display, but opens to a 7.6-inch panel, the largest on any iPhone yet.”
Reinforced titanium and ceramic body
The frame combines grade 5 titanium reinforced with internal ceramic fibers. Toughened Ceramic Shield glass covers the front and rear, backed by IP68 water and dust resistance.
Ditching Face ID for Touch ID

The Duo removes the Dynamic Island and front notch entirely. Face ID is replaced by a side-button Touch ID sensor, while the inner folding screen hides its selfie camera under the display.
“Instead of Face ID, Touch ID is built into one of the side buttons.”
Powered by the A20 Pro chip
Performance is driven by the 2nm A20 Pro processor with desktop-class super cores and a 32-core NPU. A vapor chamber three times larger than before keeps thermal throttling at bay.
“by far the fastest in any smartphone.”
Entering late, setting the standard
Foldable phones accounted for only 1.6 percent of smartphone sales in 2025. Yet rival manufacturers shifted to Apple's passport form factor months before its official announcement.
“proving Apple’s industry influence remains outsize.”
