Roland's New AI Plugin Generates Ideas, Not Finished Songs

Roland is diving into generative AI with Melody Flip, a DAW plug-in built to inspire loop ideas rather than write full tracks.

In brief

Roland is diving into generative AI with Melody Flip, a DAW plug-in built to inspire loop ideas rather than write full tracks. Melody Flip functions as an AI sketchpad for MIDI loops rather than a full-song creator, aiming to spark ideas for producers inside their DAW. Originally reported by The Verge.

Roland jumps into AI music

Synthesizer giant Roland has introduced Melody Flip, a DAW plug-in that marks the company's first foray into generative AI tools for musicians.

It’s not quite the “push button; get song” of Suno , but Roland’s new Melody Flip tool marks the company’s foray into generative AI music.

Generating sparks instead of full tracks

Unlike full-track generators like Suno or Udio, Melody Flip creates short musical loops for melodies, chord progressions, basslines, and drums to kickstart a track.

Instead, it offers simple musical loops meant to serve as a creative spark for you to build on.

Fine-tuned genres without text prompts

Users cannot type detailed text prompts into the plug-in. Instead, generation is controlled through around 250 genre palettes, key selection, BPM, and note density.

Designed for MIDI export

The built-in sounds rely on retro, general MIDI-style tones. Producers are intended to export the generated MIDI data directly into their DAW to trigger higher-quality synths.

The presets available are mostly the sort of general MIDI tones you’d find in ‘90s video games.

A risky move for community goodwill

Roland recently won back hardware purists with gear like the TR-1000, but launching an AI tool risks alienating musicians skeptical of generative tech.

But considering the general response from the music community to generative AI, Melody Flip is unlikely to garner it much goodwill.

In short

Melody Flip functions as an AI sketchpad for MIDI loops rather than a full-song creator, aiming to spark ideas for producers inside their DAW.
