Hyperliquid jumped 18% to $92.31 this week, hitting an all-time high of $94.46. Bitcoin rose just 5.11% to $81,214, still 36% below its October 2025 peak of $126,198.

On September 16, Payward announced plans to launch perpetual futures markets on Hyperliquid's blockchain for U.S. traders. These products had been largely unavailable on regulated U.S. exchanges until Kraken launched CFTC-regulated versions in June 2026.

The $46 million token requirement

Payward must stake 500,000 HYPE tokens to deploy markets on Hyperliquid's chain. At the current price of $92.31, that stake is worth approximately $46 million, creating immediate demand for the token.

Limited supply amplifies price moves

Only 26% of Hyperliquid's total supply is in circulation: 251.5 million HYPE out of 951.6 million maximum. With three-quarters locked away, buying pressure has an outsized impact on price compared to Bitcoin.

Hyperliquid's $23.25 billion market cap is just 1.4% of Bitcoin's. The same dollar amount of new investment can drive multi-percent gains in HYPE but barely move Bitcoin's order book.

Bitcoin reflects broader market sentiment

Bitcoin's 5% weekly gain shows positive crypto market momentum overall. However, Bitcoin is down 7.18% year-to-date from its December 31, 2025 close of $87,498.

Trump administration signals U.S. pathway

President Trump suggested in August that his administration was pursuing a legal pathway for Hyperliquid's entry into the U.S. market, adding to trader enthusiasm about Payward's announcement.

Gains could reverse just as quickly

Gains could reverse just as quickly

The same limited supply dynamics that drove HYPE's surge could trigger steep declines if buying pressure subsides. Future regulatory approvals and launch dates will significantly impact price dynamics.

In short

Hyperliquid's explosive gains stem from a specific catalyst (Kraken's announcement) combined with limited token supply, while Bitcoin's rise reflects broader market sentiment.
