Senator Jacqui Lambie told parliament that concealed cameras had been found in female sailors' shower facilities on HMAS Leeuwin, and that footage may have been uploaded online.

“How many of our female sailors have unknowingly been recorded in their most private moments?”

Defence launches investigation

The incident was referred to the Joint Military Police Unit and Defence is working with civilian authorities. The ship remained alongside to enable the investigation.

“Defence takes this incident extremely seriously and does not tolerate unacceptable behaviour in any form.”

Guardian Australia asked if any perpetrator had been identified, if hidden cameras had been found in other navy facilities, and if footage had been shared online. Defence did not directly answer.

At a press conference, Lambie said she was unhappy with Defence's response and demanded the department check all other vessels for hidden cameras and determine their source.

“Enough is enough. Get control of what is going on in the defence force.”
