The plant protein swap that melts menopause belly fat

A hot flash study accidentally found that swapping animal protein for plant protein drops weight with no calorie counting.

In brief

A hot flash study accidentally found that swapping animal protein for plant protein drops weight with no calorie counting. Swap 2 ounces of animal protein for plant protein and you can expect to lose about 2.2 pounds, eating until you're full. Originally reported by Woman's World.

Belly fat, no calorie math

Belly fat, no calorie math

Research in the journal Menopause found that every 2 ounces of animal protein you swap for plant protein is worth about 2.2 pounds of lost weight after 50.

“You don't need to restrict calories. You can eat until you're full and still get the effect.”

A study about hot flashes

Hana Kahleova, MD, PhD, set out to test whether a minimally processed plant-based diet would ease hot flashes. It wiped out 92 percent of them in 12 weeks.

The scale moved anyway

Participants were at a stage of life when losing weight is notoriously hard, yet everyone slimmed down. Kahleova went back and reanalyzed her data.

Same calories, same protein

Intake barely budged even with bottomless portions. Only one thing changed: the kind of protein on the plate.

“The difference was the quality of protein that they consumed.”

You can keep some meat

Going fully plant-based may burn more fat, but extra plant protein worked as an independent factor. Simply eating more of it pays off.

Fiber and antioxidants ride along

Both proteins curb hunger and feed muscle. Plant protein arrives packaged with fiber and antioxidants, while animal protein often brings saturated fat and inflammatory compounds.

Your gut picks sides

Harvard research links many animal protein foods to fast growth of bacteria that drive cravings and belly fat storage. Plant protein feeds the bacteria tied to less hunger and steadier blood sugar.

Better estrogen metabolism

Kahleova's analysis found more of the good bacteria that improve estrogen metabolism, quieting the hormonal signals behind age-related belly fat.

The methionine surprise

Plant protein carries far less of the amino acid methionine, and European Journal of Nutrition research shows that cutting methionine ramps up fat burning, especially in the belly. The study's women cut it by 40 percent.

“Not all protein is created equal.”

How to copy the study

Skip eggs, cheese and meat, limit processed food, avoid oil, and eat at least one daily serving of soybeans or edamame. Then eat whole plant foods until you're full.

Hit your protein with these

Super firm tofu delivers 17 to 22 grams a serving, chickpea pasta 13 to 14, edamame 8 to 9. Study subjects averaged 60 grams a day across four or five servings.

Go higher after 60

Some research points to closer to 90 grams daily to boost loss after 60. A scoop of plant protein powder helps, and Kahleova adds walks plus resistance training.

“But remember protein quality still matters.”

Brenda dropped five sizes

Brenda Workman before and after losing 60 pounds and reducing menopause belly fat

Raised on high-fat West Virginia cooking, Brenda Workman fought her weight for decades. At 60 she went whole-food plant-based, lost 60 pounds, and went from a size 20 to a 10.

“My only regret is that I didn't find it sooner.”

The one thing

Swap 2 ounces of animal protein for plant protein and you can expect to lose about 2.2 pounds, eating until you're full.
